Pic du Midi d'Ossau: the mythical Pyrenees trek and its legendary loop

Its jagged silhouette, rising towards the sky, is instantly recognizable: the Pic du Midi d'Ossau, at 2,884 meters, is the absolute emblem of the Pyrenees. Locals affectionately call it "Jean-Pierre." And surrounding this giant lies one of the most beautiful hiking loops in the massif. Whether you're preparing for the tour or returning with stars in your eyes, here's the essential information — and a lovely way to keep track of it.

The Pic du Midi d'Ossau in brief

Located in the Ossau Valley, in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, "Jean-Pierre" is not easily climbed — but you can tour it via a spectacular loop, accessible to experienced hikers, which reveals all sides of the summit.

  • Summit altitude: 2,884 m, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (Béarn).
  • The loop (Tour de l'Ossau): approximately 20 km, with 1,000 to 1,500 m of elevation gain depending on the variation.
  • Duration: a strenuous day, or 2 days with an overnight stay in a refuge to fully enjoy.
  • Starting point: Lake Bious-Artigues (1,422 m), near Laruns.
  • Nickname: "Jean-Pierre," after an old Béarnese legend of two shepherd brothers.
  • Best period: June to October, when the snow has melted and the refuges are open.

The itinerary and its highlights

The classic loop starts from Lake Bious-Artigues and takes in some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pyrenees:

  • The Ayous lakes — Roumassot, Miey, and especially Lake Gentau, famous for the perfect reflection of the Pic in its calm waters, one of the most photographed images of the massif.
  • The Ayous refuge (1,980 m) — an ideal stop facing the summit, magical at sunset.
  • The panoramic passes — Magnabaigt, Suzon, Peyreget, which switch between one side and the other.
  • The Pombie refuge (2,032 m) — nestled at the foot of the impressive south face, it is the base camp for mountaineers.
  • The return to Bious-Artigues — a balcony trail above the lake, with final memorable views of the Jean-Pierre.
  • Chamois, griffon vultures, horses, and cows in summer pastures: wildlife is present throughout the route.

How many days to complete the Tour de l'Ossau?

  • 1 day — strenuous version, 6 to 9 hours of walking depending on pace. For trained hikers.
  • 2 days — the most enjoyable option: an overnight stay at the Ayous or Pombie refuge, and time to admire the evening light on the Pic.
  • 3 days — for a more contemplative version, or to add the most beautiful detours in the area.
  • In July-August, remember to book the refuges several weeks in advance with the Club Alpin Français: they are often fully booked.

Tour or ascent: not to be confused

This is the most frequent and important confusion:

  • The tour of the Pic is a difficult but non-technical hike: you go around the summit without ever climbing it. Good physical condition and a little mountain experience are sufficient.
  • The ascent of the summit via the normal route is a completely different matter: high mountaineering, with three climbing chimneys where ropes are often used. It is reserved for experienced mountaineers, and the accompaniment of a guide is strongly recommended.
  • Difficulty and preparation

The tour does not require mountaineering equipment, but it is not a walk in the park. Sources indicate 1,000 to 1,500 m of elevation gain depending on the itinerary, with scree slopes to cross and, around the Col de Suzon, some sections equipped with cables and handrails. Nothing dangerous for a sure-footed hiker, but attention is necessary, especially if the rocks are wet.

Bring good shoes, poles, water (water points at Pombie refuge and Bious-Artigues), and start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in summer. And if possible, avoid August weekends: the loop is very busy then.

The detail you'll follow throughout the tour: the yellow sign

As on all great mountain trails, the yellow directional signs guide you around the Ossau: place name, altitude, walking time to the next pass or refuge. At each junction, this small yellow rectangle becomes your landmark — the one you photograph in front of the Pic, proud to have completed a new stage.

These yellow signs are the signature of the Pyrenean trails. And that's exactly what made us want to bring them into hikers' homes.

What if you personalized it?

The classic sign reproduces the Pic du Midi d'Ossau as is. But your hike has a unique story: a date, a number of days, a name, the altitude of a pass that marked you, or the name of the refuge where you spent the night facing Jean-Pierre.

With the customizable sign, you create your own plaque: indicate the place, altitude, distance, date, or any other message that matters to you. We'll take care of the rest, you frame the memory.

Personalization ideas: "Tour de l'Ossau — 20 km — completed in 2 days", your name + the year, the summit's altitude (2,884 m), or a dedication for a gift.
