Tour du Mont Blanc: the legendary Alpine trek across 3 countries
écrit par Marion BRISTour du Mont Blanc: The legendary Alpine trek crossing 3 countries
170 kilometers, 10,000 meters of elevation gain, three countries, and one massif at its heart: the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is arguably Europe's most beautiful hiking loop. Whether you're in the midst of preparation or back with burning calves, here's everything you need to know—and a lovely way to keep track of it all.
The Tour du Mont Blanc in brief
The TMB is a loop that circles the entire Mont Blanc massif, the roof of Western Europe (4,806 m). Unlike an "out-and-back" hike, you never retrace your steps: each day reveals a new valley, a new slope, a new border.
- Distance: approximately 170 km on the classic route.
- Cumulative elevation gain: approximately 10,000 m — the equivalent of climbing Everest from sea level.
- Countries crossed: France, Italy, and Switzerland.
- Average duration: 7 to 10 days of walking.
- Classic direction: counter-clockwise, starting from Les Houches, in the Chamonix Valley.
- Best period: mid-June to mid-September, when the passes are snow-free and refuges are open.
The itinerary and its legendary passes
The route connects a series of high-altitude passes, and it is precisely there that the most beautiful panoramic views unfold. Here are the highlights of the classic route, starting from Les Houches:
- Col de Voza and Les Contamines — the warm-up, with a first view of the Bionnassay glacier.
- Col du Bonhomme and Col de la Croix du Bonhomme — the atmosphere becomes distinctly alpine.
- Col de la Seigne — the crossing into Italy and the arrival facing the spectacular south side of Mont Blanc.
- Courmayeur — the major Italian stage, its refuges, and its Aosta Valley gastronomy.
- Grand Col Ferret — the crossing into Switzerland and the Val Ferret.
- Champex-Lac, La Fouly — the Swiss calm, before descending back towards France.
- Le Brévent and Lac Blanc — the grand finale, with Mont Blanc facing you before the descent to Chamonix.
How many days does it take to do the TMB?
The great advantage of the Tour du Mont Blanc is that it adapts to your fitness level and available time:
- 5 days — a sporty and demanding version, around 34 km and 2,000 m of elevation gain per day. Reserved for very well-trained hikers.
- 7 days — the balanced format for regular hikers: about 24 km and 1,400 m of elevation gain per day.
- 10 days — the most common pace: about 16-17 km and 1,000 m of elevation gain per day, allowing time to savor the experience.
- 12 to 14 days — to enjoy with family or incorporate the most beautiful variations without rushing.
Difficulty and preparation
The TMB is not technical: no climbing, no exposed sections on the main route (some ladders and more airy variations are optional). The real difficulty is endurance. Each stage involves ascending and descending, with 700 to 1,000 m of elevation gain, for 5 to 9 hours of walking depending on your pace.
Concretely, if you can complete a 15-20 km hike with 1,000 m of elevation gain without being completely exhausted, you are ready. Otherwise, a few preparatory outings in the preceding months will make all the difference. Trekking poles, good shoes, and a three-layer system are sufficient in high season.
The detail you'll follow for 170 km: the yellow sign
Here's something all "TMBers" notice without necessarily commenting on it: from one end of the route to the other, in France, Italy, and Switzerland, it's the same yellow directional signs that guide you. Place name, altitude, walking time to the next pass or refuge — this small yellow rectangle becomes your daily landmark, the one you photograph at each stage completed.
These yellow signs are the signature of the Tour du Mont Blanc. And that's exactly what made us want to bring them into hikers' homes.

At Mon Panneau de Rando, we reproduce the aesthetics of these iconic yellow signs, engraved on high-quality compact wood and made in France, in our workshop. Placed on a shelf, hung in the entryway, or given as a gift to a loved one, it's a souvenir that recalls the adventure every day—much more than a photo lost on a phone.
- Two shapes to choose from: rectangle (30 × 10 cm) or square (15 × 15 cm).
- Clear and durable engraving on compact wood.
- Handcrafted French manufacturing, local and responsible production.
- The perfect gift for a mountain enthusiast… or to reward yourself for completing the 170 km.
What if you customized it?
The classic sign reproduces the Tour du Mont Blanc as is. But your TMB has a unique story: a date, a number of days, a name, an altitude that marked you, or even the name of the pass where you thought about giving up before pushing on again.
With the customized sign, you design your own plaque: indicate the location, altitude, distance, date, or any other message that matters to you. We engrave, you frame the memory.
Customization ideas: "TMB — 170 km — completed in 8 days", your name + the year, the altitude of a legendary pass like Grand Col Ferret, or a dedication for a gift.
