A sacred symbol for Catalans, it proudly dominates the region and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean, the Roussillon plain, and the surrounding peaks. 1 Access to the starting point
Col de Jou is located between the villages of Vernet-les-Bains and Casteil. To access the start of the hike, take the road from Vernet-les-Bains towards Casteil. A small winding road will lead you to the pass, where a car park is available for your vehicle.
2 Hike Description
Itinerary
The hike starts at Col de Jou, near Casteil. The first part of the route follows a forest track leading to the Mariailles refuge. This section, although long and relatively monotonous, is ideal for warming up. You then pass through a magnificent coniferous forest. This gradual ascent allows you to enjoy the scenery without overexertion at the start, but be careful, some sections can be icy in winter. Along the way (in summer), you will find 2 water fountains.
Ascent to the Peak
After the refuge, the trail becomes steeper and crosses increasingly open slopes. The most challenging part is undoubtedly the final ascent to the summit, notably passing through the famous Canigou chimney, a rocky gully to be navigated with caution, but which adds a fun touch to the hike; you will have to use your hands to climb the last few meters.
Panoramic View at the Summit
Once you reach the summit after approximately 5 hours of ascent, you will be rewarded with a spectacular 360° panorama, stretching from the Mediterranean to the peaks of the Pyrenees, including the Catalan sierras and the Roussillon plain. In good weather, it's a truly natural spectacle, far from civilization.
Return
The return to Col de Jou follows the same route, requiring good management of effort and hydration, especially if you descend at the end of the day, with sometimes unexpected encounters with local wildlife, such as chamois in the woods.
This hike, with an elevation gain of approximately 1700 meters, is demanding but accessible to any fit and experienced hiker. It takes a full day (10-12 hours) and requires preparation, particularly in terms of equipment and timing.
2 Practical Tips (Summer)
- Equipment: This hike, while very popular, remains demanding. Bring good hiking boots with good grip for rocky sections. Also, pack a windproof jacket, a fleece, plenty of water, and energy snacks.
- Weather: Always check the weather conditions before you go. Canigou can experience sudden weather changes, with strong winds or clouds that can quickly envelop the summit. In winter, snow makes the ascent much more difficult.
- Schedule: It is recommended to start early in the morning to avoid high temperatures in summer and to have enough time to reach the summit and return before nightfall.
3 An Unforgettable Experience
Reaching the summit of Canigou from Col de Jou is a real challenge, but the effort is largely rewarded by breathtaking landscapes and the satisfaction of having climbed a mythical mountain. Whether you are an experienced hiker or a nature lover, this adventure will leave you with lasting memories.
